Hilwood Sanitizer launches in Ontario Sobeys

Local distillery becomes first local hand sanitizer partner to national supermarket

Waterloo, ON. May 25, 2020 – Hilwood – subsidiary of Pepprell Distilling Co. – today announced its supplier partnership arrangement with Canadian supermarket leader, Sobeys Inc. The local distillery’s Hilwood Hand Sanitizer is now on the shelves of select Ontario locations of the grocery giant. Hilwood is the first local Ontario distiller of hand sanitizer to be featured at Sobeys.

“Partnering with Sobeys is allowing us to bring more hand sanitizer to our community on a broader scale than we ever thought was possible,” said Josh Cormier, Head Distiller at Pepprell Distilling Co. “Each member of the Hilwood founding team grew up in Ontario so we are well rooted here and couldn’t be happier to officially share this news with our community.”

Pepprell Distilling Co. announced last month its official business pivot from distilling spirits to hand sanitizer and quickly launched an online store. The company’s focus was to distribute hand sanitizer out to its community’s vulnerable populations.

“We are proud to carry Canadian-made products from local businesses and suppliers on our shelves,” said Sheri Evans, Local Development Manager, Ontario Field Merchandising, Sobeys. “Made here in Ontario, Hilwood Hand Sanitizer is a great example of local innovation to help meet the increased demand for this product.”

“Partnering with a Canadian distributor that really supports local has been a goal since the beginning, said Cameron Curry, Sales and Development Lead at Pepprell. “We are ecstatic about our partnership with a community-centric company like Sobeys and are looking forward to the future.”

Curry’s support of Sobeys has deep roots starting in 2012 when he took on a role in the bakery at his local Sobeys in Kitchener. He currently still resides in Kitchener and couldn’t be happier about this partnership.

Pepprell Distilling is still asking for business owners and individuals with access to bottles and containers of all kinds to contact them via their website. Demand for hand sanitizer has created a shortage of bottles and the distillery is looking to get creative with its packaging.

Hilwood sanitizer is now available at select Sobeys locations across Ontario including:

640 Parkside Dr., Waterloo

310 Colborne St. West, Brantford

Local Distillery halts production of spirits to meet growing demand for hand sanitizer in an effort to combat COVID-19

Hand sanitizer availability increasing in Waterloo Region this month

Waterloo, ON. April 2020 – Local distillery Pepprell Distilling Co. has been approved by the Government of Canada to produce hand sanitizer and will be selling and distributing to Waterloo Region as soon as next week. The company founded in 2016, has made a big pivot with the business this month stopping their production of spirits completely to shift to the production of hand sanitizer.

Continuing with its business naming convention after the street the company was founded on, Pepprell Distilling Co. – named after Pepperell St. in Halifax – will operate under the name Hilwood, after the street it’s warehouse sits on in Moorefield, Ontario.

“Switching up production to hand sanitizer was a no-brainer for our team,” said Head Distiller Josh Cormier. “We wanted to create a local product that could be delivered quickly to those in need in the Waterloo Region, especially our front line workers, emergency responders and vulnerable populations.”

Every Partner in the Hilwood business is taking this very seriously as they each have a family member deemed “high-risk”; two have family members in long-term care, one spouse is a firefighter, another’s a nurse, another’s is six-months into a high-risk pregnancy. For the team, protecting the community is personal and nothing to be taken lightly.

“At the end of the day we just want to get hand sanitizer out to as many people as soon as possible,” said Cameron Curry, Pepprell’s sales and business development lead. “We’re looking to partner and work with local businesses to help fight the spread of COVID-19 in our community.”

Hilwood’s primary goal right now is to support the community’s vulnerable sectors. The company is now asking for business owners and individuals with access to bottles and containers of all kinds to contact Hilwood. Demand for hand sanitizer has created a shortage of bottles and the distillery is looking to get creative with its packaging.
